Ciao!
It’s been cold and rainy in Bologna this week, and the season couldn’t be more accurate to cozy up with that glass of red wine and some appropriate food to accompany it.
As much as I wanted those warm days to continue, I have to admit the warm season has officially ended and it’s clearly manifested itself in the change of wine in my glass. So, it’s finally time to move on from those fresh Summer white wines to some more fuller and warming reds. I have collected few of new finds, and introducing a very special one to my paid subscribers in the end.
So let’s get to it.
Cari Saluti,
Emilia in Bologna

A great price value Dolcetto D’Alba
Vietti Trevigne Dolcetto D’Alba 2020 Piemonte
Last Friday night we enjoyed a nice Dolcetto D’Alba at one of my favorite neighbourhood restaurants Osteria la Fontana. They have a great selection of wines and the personnel are always recommending something I haven’t tried before.
The Dolcetto D’Alba from the Vietti Winery is a quite easy going,
approachable red with a nice touch of elegance and freshness. It went nicely with both our cheese appetizer and pasta dishes.
The winery is located in the heart of the Langhe hills, and the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800s by Carlo Vietti. Vietti family has produced wines for four generations, and today their vineyards include some of the most highly-prized terroirs within the Barolo winegrowing area. They produce a bunch of different wines very typical to the area.
Made with 100% of Dolcetto and aged in steel tanks, the 2020 vintage has a lively purple red colour with blackberry and raspberry aromas. It’s a medium-body, with soft tannins, moderate acidity with mineral and blueberry notes. A good balanced wine.
Pair it with easygoing dishes, such as pasta with lighter sauces.

A not so serious Sparkling Red
Sparkling reds or the local Lambrusco were not something I was planning to feature in this post. However, it’s a local staple and a fun, not-too serious way to enjoy a glass of red.
For the first months living in Bologna, we were drinking Lambrusco or sparkling reds very often. Now, it’s been over a year and I hadn’t had it since end of last year. This week I was feeling nostalgic and chose to try a glass of sparkling Barbera from the Colli Bolognesi (the local hills) with my lunch.
The Barbera Frizzante from Colli Bolognesi was a fun surprise and just what I was craving for: an uplifting yet warming glass of something red. Cantina Ca’Beltrami is a winery located in between the hills of Bologna and Monte San Pietro and has been producing wines for decades in full respect of the environment. The winery enjoys a privileged position: immersed in the Emilian countryside, it is easily reachable from Bologna. The Barbera frizzante is made with 100% barbera dry, bubbling red, with medium tannins and acidity paired nicely with pastas or a charcuterie board.
Where to find it:
L'è Bon Food Lab, Via Rialto 54b
Tip! Try their Tagliatelle al Ragu. You won’t regret it.
