ADI Design Museum showcasing Italian Design

Campari logo in many shapes and forms at ADI Museum

Ciao!
The temperature has been rising in Bologna and I’ve tried to find ways to stay cool. This week when in mood for wine, I’ve been opting for cold white wines. I’ve explored a new region for wine, which I’ll share with you in this week’s Merenda Newsletter. In addition to wine, I visited Milano on a school trip to the new ADI Design Museum. It’s a beautiful museum dedicated to Italian innovation and design well worth visiting next time you’re in Milano. The museum represented a lot of food and cooking related innovation and design, which has affected the Italian food culture we know today.

Now let’s get into it!

Cari Saluti,
Emilia in Bologna

Are you enjoying Merenda? I’d love if you would forward it to a friend or family member. Grazie!

ADI Design Museum

ADI stands for the Association for Industrial Design, and the museum showcases design and innovation from the 1950’s to this day. The design collection concludes of the Compasso d’Oro award. This award was created in 1954 by Gio Ponti to promote the quality of Made in Italy design. The museum has both a the permanent collection and closely curated temporary exhibitions. ADI Design was opened in May last year.

The first innovation and design pieces of ADI’s collection

The idea behind the museum is to protect and enhance the design and innovation of the award. The Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage recognises the Compasso d’Oro award of exceptional artistic and historical interest.

Two relevant innovations related to cooking: an iron oven and the La Cimbali coffee machine

We had a guided tour of the permanent collection, which was fantastic and reminded me of how much more one can get out of an exhibition with a guide. The museum space is beautiful, filled with natural light and industrial grandiose. I especially enjoyed the design and innovation of coffee machines, such as the La Cimbali coffee machine and the Neapolitan coffee machine Pulcinella - which the exhibition stated as Opera Buffa del Design.

Our tour ended at an aisle of posters, where the idea is that each visitor can choose their own to take home. The museum has a very chic café and bar and a shop worth visiting.
